MALOPOLSKA
GEOGRAPHY AND DEMOGRAPHY
Malopolska is situated in the south of Poland, on Slovakian border, and covers a total area of 15.000 km², almost 5% of the total national territory. The territory has different characteristics, covering both plain and mountainous parts. The most important city of this region is Krakow,one of the oldest and largest cities of all the country, with a population of 780.000, situated on the Vistula the longest river in Poland. Małopolskie have a population of 3240.9 thousand residents, and a population density of 214 persons per km², the second highest in Poland.
INFRASTRUCTURES
The region has well-developed transportation networks: the density of the railways networks is higher than the Poland average (7.6 km per 100 km² vs 6.4 km). The public roads cover 21.7 thousand km. The region also have an airport, national and international, situated near Krakow.
ECONOMY
Ma³opolska has an economy developed enough, and it generates 7.4% of GDP. The per capita GDP is 3.957 EUR, lower than the national average. Services have the largest part in the regional economy, 62.9%, while industry and construction reach 34.1% and agriculture 3.0%. Krakow is also the economical centre of the region, hosting the majority of the registered companies with foreign capital (among which cable, telecommunications, computer, pharmaceutical, printing and building materials industries have a key role).
LABOUR MARKET
The employment rate is one of the higher in Poland (50.3% against 46.1% in the country). The average number of unemployed persons in Ma³opolskie is 6.1% of unemployment in the country. Despite the high degree of unemployment in the country (18.2%), the unemployment rate in the region remained the lowest in Poland (13.0%).

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
The region spends 0.6% of the its GDP in research and development. Jagiellonian University, the oldest school of higher learning in Poland as well as one of the oldest in Europe, is located in Kraków.
