OPOLSKIE
GEOGRAPHY AND DEMOGRAPHY
Opolskie region is the smallest of the 16 Polish regions in terms of the area. It lies in south-western Poland, bordering with the Czech Republic and with four Polish regions: Lower Silesia, Wielkopolska, Lódzkie and Silesia.

With population of around 1.1 million inhabitants and area covering 9,412 km2, the region is predominantly plain, rich in mineral resources and underground water reservoirs, particularly along he Odra river which is a natural route for cheap and environment-friendly transport as well as potential for tourism development.
INFRASTRUCTURES
Taking advantage of good soils and temperate climate, agriculture plays an important role in the region's economy. According to the main Polish national statistics institution (GUS) in year 2008 Opolskie had more than average in Poland share of industrial production within the added value structure, taking seventh place of Polish regions. The main in the region are energetic fuels, electromechanical, chemical, cement and limestone, food processing, building and construction, car, metal and furniture industries. Regional Foresight analysis until 2020 for Opolskie region confirms strong position of most enumerated industrial branches above.

Opolskie region has good geographical position - it is located between two dynamic economically regions of Silesia and Lower Silesia; the motorway A-4 (connecting Dresden and Berlin with Kiev) passes through the centre of the region, offering good connections.
ECONOMY
Quality of life and investment offer - facts and figures:
  • According to the "Forbes" magazine1, Opole (capital of the region) is the third most attractive city to foreign investment and the ninth most attractive city to business development in Poland;
  • According to the “Wprost” magazine2, Opole city takes the third place on the list of Polish cities regarding good quality of life and the first place as a city having good infrastructure;
  • After the 3 biggest Polish cities, Opole ranked No. 4 in Poland the for the highest amount of money spent for public infrastructure investment in 20063.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
In the field of innovation policy, Opolskie Centre for Economy Development is the Managing Institution of the Regional Innovation Strategy and acts on behalf of the Self-Government of the Opolskie region. Regional Innovation System members are:
  • University of Opole, Opole Technical University, number of higher education institutions and R&D institutions (such as Institute of Heavy Organic Synthesis in Kedzierzyn-Kozle and Technological Institute of Mineral Building Materials in Opole);
  • SMEs and big enterprises;
  • Regional administration: Office of the Marshal of the Opolskie Voivodeship as an institution coordinating regional policy and Opolskie Centre for Economy Development, as an institution responsible for innovation policy implementation and supporting SMEs development in the region;
  • other public and private institutions.
