OSTERGOTLAND
GEOGRAPHY AND DEMOGRAPHY
Ostergotland is situated in the south eastern part of Sweden. It has an area of 10,562 square kilometres (2% of the total Swedish area), and a population of 411,320 people, with a density of 39 inhabitants per square km.
INFRASTRUCTURES
The region has well-developed transportation networks. The harbour in Norrköping is one of the most important harbours in the Baltic Sea.
ECONOMY
Manufacturing in the region covers a range of industries. Most of Sweden's international enterprises are represented. The GDP level in Östergötland is lower than the national level (85%). The same is concerning GDP per capita. In comparison with Stockholm, Östergötland's GDP per capita is considerable lower. The region represents 4% of the national GDP.
LABOUR MARKET
Of the total regional population, 65% are of employable age, i.e. between 15 and 64 years old. The activity rate is 69.5%. The largest proportion of the population is now employed in the service sector, whereas 25 years ago most people worked in industry. The unemployment rate in the region was 5.1% in 2001. The employment rate is around 70% of active population.

Some Parts of the region belong to EU objective Phasing in, the rest belongs to ob. Competitiveness 2007-2013.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Many of the industries in the region are also R&D intensive. Industries of this kind are generally found in the larger urban areas. The Östergötland region is at a considerable higher level with regard research and development compared to Stockholm. Östergötland is in a leading position with regard research and development within areas of high technology and research intensity.
