GEOGRAPHY AND DEMOGRAPHY
Piemonte is situaded in the north-western part of Italy. The region, covering a great part of the Alpine Arch and the river Po plain, is subdivided into eight provinces - Turin, Vercelli, Biella, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Novara, Cuneo, Asti and Alessandria. Half the population is located in the province of Turin, with the capital city itself accounting for about one million inhabitants, or a good quarter of the total population. The region covers an area of 25.399 square km and it is one of the biggest Italy's regions. Its population reaches 4.214.677 inhabitants, and its density is 165,9 persons per square km. |

INFRASTRUCTURE
The region has a very good system of infrastructures with important highways, roads, railroads that connect Piemonte with the rest of the country and the rest of Europe. The airport of Turin is very important for the region communication, and the city is well connected even with the great airport of Malpensa. |

ECONOMY
Piemonte contributes to the gross value added of Italy with 8.7%, while its population is 7.4% of the national total.
Per capita GDP is above the national average and represented 120% of the EU average. The industry sector is important in the region, and agriculture too is well developed (The main agricultural products in Piemonte are cereals, including rice, representing more than 10% of national production in 1999, maize, grapes for wine-making and fruit and milk). Tourism too is an important resource for the region economy; Turin city centre attracts every year a large number of visitors, and other parts of the region do the same (for example, Biella with the Oropa Sanctuary, a very beautiful holy monument set in the mountains, or Alessandria and Asti with Monferrato landscapes). |

LABOUR MARKET
The activity rate (% of the working population in relation to the corresponding total population) in Piemonte is 62,2%. The female employment rate is 51,8% and the male one is 72%. The current unemployment rate is around 5%. The number of persons employed in agricultural sector is 61.500, those who work in industry are 683.500, whereas those who are employed in the services sector are 1.043.500 people. |

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Piemonte spends about 1,65% of its GDP in research and development: 0,29% of regional GDP goes to the public sector, 0,09% to government, 0,02% to university and 1,36 to private sector.
