STOCKHOLM
GEOGRAPHY AND DEMOGRAPHY
Located on the south east coast of Sweden by the Baltic sea, Stockholm is the capital and the largest city in Sweden, with a population of 774,000. The region covers an area of 9,000 square km, it has a population of 1.900.000 people, with a density of 212 persons per square km.
INFRASTRUCTURE
The area has a good structure of infrastructures and communication (motorway, road, etc.). Moreover, the port and the airport of Stockholm are important links for all Sweden.
ECONOMY
The service sector is the main one in the region; and government and municipal administrations are concentrated in the capital region. There are five big industrial branches in the region: electrical, graphical, machinery, chemical and transportation-vehicles industries, that employ 80% of the total labour force in industry. The regional GDP is 70,000 (in Mill.EUR), and the per capita GDP is 36.800 (in K EUR).
LABOUR MARKET
The employment rate reaches 77.5% (the female employment rate is 76,3% and the male one is 78,6%). The unemployment rate is almost 3%.More people are employed in the service sector (89% of the total employment of the region) compared to the national average (73%). Hence, fewer people are employed in the industrial (10%) and agricultural (1%) sectors compared to other Swedish regions.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
The region spends 4,3% of its GDP is research and development, 1,075% in public sector, 0,1475 in government, 0.9285 in university and 3,225% in private sector.
DATA RELATED TO REGIONAL STRUCTURAL FUNDS MECHANISMS
Minor parts of the region (the islands) are ERDF objective 2. The rest of the region is a non objective area.
REGIONAL PROGRAMME OF INNOVATIVE ACTIONS (RPIA)
The area had a Regional Program of Innovative Actions (Regional economies based on knowledge and technological innovation). Its total cost was 4. 771. 500 Euro. The program had five action lines:
  • Strengthening the intellectual capital
  • Commercial market for technology-based solutions
  • High-density TIME-environments
  • Market-oriented innovation system
  • Accompanying measures and Technical assistance

The cost per action was: 343,178 Euro for action one, 2,365,763 Euro for action two, 790,000 Euro for action three, 941,059 Euro for action four, 100,000 Euro for action five, and 231,500 Euro for action six. EU participated with 2.231.000 euros of ERDF funding for the current program period (2000-2006), whereas 1.524.000 euros came from national public funding, and the rest from private funding.
