ERIK STUDY TOUR
Birmingham/West Midlands, UK
The TechnoCentre, Coventry University and Advantage West Midlands,Birmingham |
On the first day, the Study Visit offered participants the opportunity of choosing between the University of Warwick Science park and Birmingham's Jewellery Centre. As regards Birmingham's Jewellery Centre, this is situated in the centre of Birmingham in the Jewellery Quarter. Birmingham has a craft and jewellery history dating back hundreds of years and the jewellery quarter came into being as a result of convenience. The diversity of jewellery manufacturing and the variety of expertise required, brought together a pool of specialists that still create a very successful team. The different phases in the production of jewels, starting from the actual
designing were shown and explained and the school of jewellery was also visited.
On the second day, the Study Visit offered the opportunity of choosing among the following realities:
· Technology & Innovation Centre (Birmingham) + Photonic centre
· University of Birmingham HP Visual and Spatial Technology Centre
· University of Birmingham Open Source Solution Centre (Open Advantage)
The University of Birmingham HP Visual and Spatial Technology Centre , established in partnership with HP and the Institute of Archaeology and Antiquity at Birmingham in 2003, is equipped with advanced computing technology which can turn useful in many domains (such as the medical sector) but are particularly important for archaeological research. The HP Visual Centre provides a base for academic research and application development for spatial analysis, visualisation and imaging in archaeology and interdisciplinary studies. Such a technology is revolutionising how archaeology views the past, form geophysics to the creation of virtual worlds. Facilities in the Centre are designed for the capture, analysis, manipulation and display of large digital archaeological data sets and the advanced and unparalleled equipment make this Centre one of Britain's foremost research Universities in the sector.
The University of Birmingham Open Source Solution Centre is a small spin off from the University which encourages the adoption and use of Open Source software with the aim to enhance the competitive position of businesses and the efficiency and effectiveness of public sector organisations in the West Midlands. The Open Source Centre offers a complete range of services, from an introduction to the compelling attributes of open source software to helping clients develop their own bespoke and niche solutions. In the light of today's dynamic environment, the Centre provides useful and competent expertise for the inclusion of open source solutions (OSS) in IT strategies. |
